Dental extraction is a common procedure in dentistry, whether to remove a damaged tooth, a tooth causing crowding, or a wisdom tooth that lacks space to grow properly. Although the idea of a dental extraction can cause anxiety, proper postoperative care is essential for ensuring a swift and complication-free recovery. At Global Dent Clinic, with locations in Villeray, Hochelaga, and Ste-Julie, we care about our patients' health and want to provide the best guidance for postoperative care following a dental extraction.
Immediately After the Extraction
Bleeding Control
After the tooth has been extracted, it is common to experience slight bleeding. The dentist will place a gauze pad over the extraction site and ask you to bite down firmly for about 30 to 45 minutes. This process helps form a blood clot at the extraction site, which is crucial for healing.
Tips for bleeding control:
If bleeding continues after the gauze is removed, place a new gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes.
Avoid rinsing your mouth, spitting, or using a straw, as these actions can dislodge the blood clot and prolong the bleeding.
Keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, to reduce blood flow to the extraction area.
Pain Management
Pain and discomfort are normal after a dental extraction. Your dentist will prescribe painkillers to help manage the pain. Follow the dosage instructions and do not wait until the pain is severe before taking medication.
Tips for pain management:
Use anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen as prescribed.
Apply an ice pack to the area of your face near the extraction site to reduce swelling and pain during the first 24 hours.
Avoid strenuous physical activities that could increase blood pressure and cause more pain or bleeding.
