Dental Health Month is a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. During this month, at Global Dent Dental Clinic, we want to offer you some essential tips for maintaining optimal oral hygiene and preventing long-term dental problems. Adopting good habits can make a big difference in ensuring that your smile remains healthy and radiant. Here are some detailed and valuable tips to help you take care of your oral health.
BRUSH YOUR TEETH TWICE A DAY
Brushing your teeth is the cornerstone of good oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day, in the morning and before bed, is essential to prevent plaque buildup and the formation of cavities. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that constantly forms on our teeth, and if it’s not regularly removed, it can turn into tartar, which can lead to much more serious problems.

Extra Tip: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging your tooth enamel and gums.
Also, make sure to change your toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if the bristles are worn. For better brushing, make gentle circular motions, ensuring you reach all surfaces of your teeth and gums.
Did You Know? A study by the Canadian Dental Association suggests that people who brush their teeth after every meal have a 50% lower risk of developing serious dental diseases compared to those who only brush once a day.
2. USE FLOSS DAILY
Flossing is an essential step that’s often forgotten, but it’s crucial for removing plaque and food particles between your teeth and under the gumline, areas that a toothbrush can’t reach. Using dental floss helps not only to prevent cavities between teeth but also gum diseases like gingivitis, which can progress into periodontitis if not treated.

Extra Tip: Make sure to floss correctly. Take about 18 inches of floss and wrap the ends around your fingers, leaving 2-3 inches of floss to work with. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and around the gumline in a “C” shape. Don’t apply too much pressure to avoid damaging the gums.
Did You Know? A study from Harvard University reveals that regular flossing significantly reduces the risk of gum disease, which is responsible for tooth loss in adults.
3. VISIT YOUR DENTIST REGULARLY
Regular visits to the dentist are essential, not just for spotting visible problems like cavities, but also for identifying conditions that can develop in hard-to-see or feel areas, such as gum diseases or root canal problems. A full dental checkup includes a professional cleaning, which helps remove tartar and plaque that accumulate over time.

Extra Tip: You shouldn’t just visit your dentist when you feel pain or discomfort. Regular visits are preventive and can save you money in the long run because treating dental issues at their initial stages is usually less expensive and less invasive.
Did You Know? According to the Canadian Dental Association, more than 80% of people who visit their dentist regularly maintain optimal oral health, while those who only visit in case of an emergency are 3 times more likely to experience severe dental problems.
4. LIMIT YOUR SUGAR INTAKE
Sugar is one of the leading causes of cavities. When you consume sugar, the bacteria in your mouth break it down and produce acids that attack the enamel of your teeth. Over time, this can lead to cavities and other dental problems.

Extra Tip: If you consume something sugary, try to do so during meals rather than between meals. This way, your saliva will help neutralize the acids. Also, if you can’t avoid a craving, opt for fresh fruits, which are less harmful to your teeth due to their fiber and water content.
Did You Know? The World Health Organization recommends that adults limit their sugar intake to no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake to maintain good oral and overall health.
5. AVOID SMOKING
Smoking doesn’t only affect your lungs, it can also severely harm your oral health. Smoking contributes to plaque buildup, stains on your teeth, bad breath, and more seriously, increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.

Extra Tip: If you smoke, try to talk to your dentist about strategies to quit smoking. There are treatments and support programs available that can help you with this process, and your oral health will benefit greatly.
Did You Know? Smoking can reduce the success rate of dental implants by up to 50% because it affects the healing of the gums.
